A Good Day

This picture is from my second (and last) visit to my Dad in the hospital in Minnesota. He was having a really good day - lucid, and funny, even with his word-finding issues. He asked me to take out his FDA computer and set it up, which I did; and he was pleased with that, even though neither of us could figure out how to log on.
He kept asking for a particular medication, although he had trouble remembering the name. I got to it inductively ("Which of these five classes of diuretic, Dad? Which of these kinds in this class?") It was one that I had not heard of, and one that he had to introduce the doctors to. We figured it out, and I printed out the FDA information on the drug. Although it wasn't one that was appropriate for his care, as always, outsmarting - and then teaching - everyone in the room made him happy.

He was feeling good enough to put on this very dapper hat, and gave me a smile.

I sent this picture out to our family via email, and then I left to go back home.

It is too sad.

  1. I was fortunate enough to spend time with my uncle Avi in his final weeks while he was still rather lucid. Though clearly not well, he didn't miss the chance to insert his patented humor. When asked "how do you feel?", he raised his hand as high as he could and proclaimed "With my fingers!"
