an email from a colleague of Dad's (as an intern!)

It was nice speaking to you Nancy. As I told you, I have many wonderful memories of Avi.We were interns together at Jacobi and Einstein.  He and I had a fair amount in common as we were frum interns with spouses and children, which was rare. We were thrown together a lot as we did many of the same rotations together. He was a brilliant man and his intelligence was reflected in the way he looked at each patient carefully and cautiously. The famous story of Avi's great diagnosis in Jacobi ER reflects the way he thought of zebras as well as horses when he heard hoof beats. (I'm sure you know: if you hear hoof beats, think horses not zebras)Well, avi diagnosed the one case of malaria in the ER that year, probably the only 1 in the Bronx because he thought of everything! He cared so much about his wife and children and often spoke about them and how hard it was to be away from them so much.In the old days, ( "the days of the Giants"), we were on call all night every 3 nights and worked the day after we were on call as well ( 36 hour shifts). When I was on call in the NICU, another rotation we did together, I used to beg him to sign out early and go home when I was on call. I figured I'm there anyway, let me help him get out. He wouldn't consider signing out until he had made sure every patient was cared for and that he had organized his notes perfectly, even though I was offering to do some of his 'scut' work for him. He was that conscientious. ( I was very pregnant at that time with a small boy at home and it could be he was trying to spare me even though I wanted to help him out).In some ways, going through internship together felt like we were going through a war and we were a real support system for each other. Well, Avi Karkowsky and I were in the trenches together and I value the time we spent with each other.

(Nancy, please feel free to edit if you'd like. The only one of your children I remember was Chavi. I'm sure avi was very proud of her and all your children. Have lots of nachas from them.)
